African American Essay Contest 2012

100 Black Men of St. Mary Essay Contest

The 100 Black Men of St. Mary have kicked off their annual African American History Contest in honor of Black History Month.

The contest is open to all students in St. Mary Parish.

 From now through February 29, students in grades fifth through 12 can enter, byfaxing, e-mailing or mailing an essay on any topic in African American History.

 Students can mail or fax their essays to the host radio station for the contest KBZE 105.9FM. The address is: African American History Essay Contest, c/o KBZE 105.9FM, 1320 Victor II Blvd, Morgan City, La. 70380. Essays can be emailed at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

 Students can turn in an essay of 100 to 500 words on any topic in history.

 Please note that all essays must have the first and last name of the student, along with atelephone number of where the student can be contacted after 6 p.m.. If any essay is turned in without this information, it will automatically be disqualified.

 The first place winner will receive $200 in cash; the second place winner will receive $150 in cash; and the third place winner will receive $100 in cash. All prize monies will be awarded and judged by the 100 Black Men of St. Mary.  Also, all winners will be allowed to air their essay sometime in March, on KBZE 105.9FM.

Additionally, every student who enters the contest will have once chance to win four tickets to a New Orleans Hornets Basketball Game and one of three $25 gift certificates to Community Book Center, New Orleans’ largest African American Book Store. These prize winners will be drawn at random, from a list of students who have turned in an essay, by KBZE 105.9FM.
